The First Village for Digital Nomads
Madeira, the Portuguese island known for its mild climate, has become a magnet for remote workers since 2020, and this film follows the freelancers building a life in the village of Ponta do Sol. Nina, who arrived from Munich in 2021, set out to create a "digital village" anchored by a free co-working space, and now manages shared co-living flats for the freelancers who pass through. Most stay only a few months before moving on, and the film sits with the loneliness that turnover creates, even amid the postcard scenery. Heiko, a graphic designer who has dreamed of Madeira since childhood, arrives hoping the digital nomad community will give him a foothold on the island. Alongside these personal stories, the film tracks the cost: rents and living expenses have climbed sharply as freelancers move in, pushing out longtime residents. The result is a portrait of a paradise with real strain underneath it, told through the people trying to build permanence in a place built for transience.
