The Forgiveness Journey
Matt Duhamel, the film's director, turns the camera on himself first, describing his 2006 arrest and conviction for a sex offense and the years since spent trying to rebuild a relationship with his estranged daughter, Maddie. Alongside his own account, the film follows Vicky, a newspaper editor near Portland, Oregon, working through a childhood marked by abuse as she tries to reconcile with her mother, grandfather, and stepfather. Their stories run in parallel, each one tracking forgiveness not as a single decision but as a slow, uneven process with setbacks built in. Psychologists, authors, and other professionals appear in interview segments throughout, breaking down what forgiveness actually requires and drawing a line between forgiving others and forgiving oneself. The film stays close to its two central subjects rather than widening into a general survey, using their specific circumstances, a criminal conviction on one side, childhood abuse on the other, to test what reconciliation looks like when the offense is serious and the relationships are still, at least partly, intact.
