In 1945, close to one million Jews lived across the Middle East and North Africa, in communities in Egypt, Yemen, Libya, Iraq, and Morocco that in some cases stretched back over 2,500 years. Within a generation, only a few thousand remained. Director Michael Grynszpan builds the film around testimony from the refugees themselves, people who fled sudden violence and legal persecution and rebuilt their lives in transit camps and new countries, their accounts cut against archival footage of the exodus, including rescue operations that airlifted Yemenite and Iraqi Jews out of the region. Scholars fill in the historical context: the riots and expulsions that emptied these communities, the property and status lost overnight, and the reasons this displacement rarely makes it into standard accounts of Middle Eastern history. Produced with The David Project Center for Jewish Leadership and Isra TV, the film stays close to individual memory rather than abstraction, using the refugees' own words to trace how a set of ancient, distinct communities disappeared from the map within a few decades.
