The Fritzl Affair

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

In 2008, Austrian police discovered that Josef Fritzl had held his daughter Elisabeth captive in a soundproofed cellar beneath his house in Amstetten for 24 years, fathering seven children with her during that imprisonment. This film reconstructs the case through news footage, court reporting, and interviews with journalists and investigators who worked the story as it broke, tracing how Fritzl maintained the deception in plain sight of neighbors and even his own wife upstairs. It follows the police investigation that finally cracked the case when one of the cellar-born children needed hospital treatment, forcing Elisabeth's existence into the open after more than two decades. The film lays out the timeline of Fritzl's control, from the initial imprisonment in 1984 through the trial that followed his arrest, and considers how a case this extreme went undetected for so long in an ordinary Austrian town. It stays with the factual record rather than dramatizing the abuse, treating the case as a study in concealment and institutional failure.
