The four Gospels are the main source for the life of Christ, but they were written decades after the events they describe. This History Hit film examines the case for and against Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John as eyewitness accounts, tracing the 30 to 40 year gap between Jesus's crucifixion and the earliest written texts and what that gap means for the reliability of oral tradition turned into scripture. Historians and biblical scholars walk through the evidence for authorship, the political and theological pressures that shaped the early church's choices about which accounts to canonize, and the individual stories of Peter, Mary Magdalene, and Judas Iscariot as both scriptural figures and possible historical people. Location filming evokes Galilee and the wider Roman world the Gospel writers inhabited. Rather than defending or debunking the texts outright, the film separates what can be argued from historical and textual evidence from what remains theological construction, leaving the reliability question open but far better informed.
