In 1948, as Palestinian families fled or were expelled from their homes during the Nakba, Israeli soldiers and librarians moved through emptied houses in Jerusalem, Haifa, and elsewhere collecting books, some 30,000 to 70,000 volumes, along with manuscripts and family papers. The film follows that collection into the present, where many of the books sit in Israel's National Library catalogued under the heading "AP" for Abandoned Property, still bearing the names and marginalia of owners who never got them back. Interviews with librarians, historians, and Palestinian families who remember specific missing volumes lay out two competing framings of the same act: that soldiers were preserving books that would otherwise have been destroyed or looted, and that the state was appropriating a people's written culture along with their land. Archival photographs and library records anchor the account of how the collection happened and how it was administered afterward. The film stays with the practical afterlife of the books, who has access to them now, and who has asked for them back, rather than resolving the dispute for the viewer.
