In 1924, George Mallory and Andrew Irvine set off for the summit of Everest and vanished into the clouds, leaving behind one of mountaineering's oldest unanswered questions: did they reach the top before they died. This film traces the early British expeditions that treated Everest as an imperial as much as a physical challenge, working through the oxygen equipment, ropes, and clothing that pioneers had to improvise against a mountain nobody understood yet. It sets Mallory and Irvine's fatal attempt against the successful 1953 ascent by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, using that gap of nearly thirty years to show how much had to be learned about hypoxia, avalanche risk, and Everest's sudden weather before anyone could survive the climb. Mallory's body, found decades later without the camera that might have settled the mystery, anchors the film's central puzzle. Archival photographs, expedition accounts, and historians walk through the evidence piece by piece, without pretending to a final answer the mountain has never given up.
