Rossio Station has anchored the center of Lisbon for more than a century, its neo-Manueline facade and twin horseshoe doorways making it one of the more recognizable railway buildings in Europe. This film goes past the platforms to follow the people who keep the station running: engineers maintaining aging track and signal equipment, staff managing the crowds of daily commuters, and the historians who explain how the building survived earthquakes, wars, and the city's constant redevelopment around it. Cameras follow trains arriving from Sintra and the surrounding region, linger on the ticket halls and stone stairways, and catch the small daily rituals of people who pass through the station without a second glance at the architecture overhead. The film treats the station as a working cross-section of Lisbon itself, using it to show how a 19th-century transport hub still functions inside a modern city. Interviews with staff and locals fill out the picture of a building that is equal parts monument and machine.
