The Hong Konger: Jimmy Lai's Extraordinary Struggle for Freedom

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Jimmy Lai's life runs from a boyhood spent working as a porter in Guangzhou to smuggling himself into Hong Kong as a child, building the Giordano clothing chain into a retail empire, and then giving much of it up to found Apple Daily, a newspaper that became the loudest pro-democracy voice in the territory. The film follows that arc through interviews, archival footage, and reenactments, tracking his transformation from garment-industry tycoon into the target of Beijing's national security law. It covers the 2019 protests, the police raids on Apple Daily's newsroom, and Lai's eventual arrest and imprisonment on charges tied to his activism and foreign contacts, framing his case as a test of how much freedom survives under Chinese rule. Family members, colleagues, and fellow activists describe what it cost him personally, including prison sentences he could have avoided by leaving Hong Kong when he had the chance. The film treats his refusal to flee as the center of the story: a businessman who kept publishing after almost everyone around him had gone quiet.
