The Rothschild family rises from the Frankfurt ghetto to become the financial network behind some of nineteenth-century Europe's most powerful governments, and historian Niall Ferguson narrates the case for how they did it. Drawing on his own biography of the family, Ferguson traces the five brothers who spread from Frankfurt to London, Paris, Vienna, and Naples, building a banking house that financed wars, floated government bonds, and kept lines open to statesmen across rival capitals at once. He treats the family's Judaism as central rather than incidental, showing how religious identity and tight internal loyalty, including marriages kept within the family, held the business together across borders and generations. The film also follows the Rothschilds' quieter role helping persecuted Jewish communities elsewhere in Europe. Along the way it addresses the conspiracy theories and antisemitic myths that grew up around the family's wealth, weighing them against the archival record Ferguson worked from. The result is a portrait built on financial detail and political history rather than legend.
