William Kidd was hanged for piracy in 1701, but the legend of the treasure he supposedly buried before his capture never died. This episode of Myth Hunters follows actor Richard Knight, who has spent years chasing the story, as he tracks Kidd's final voyage from the Indian Ocean to the Caribbean and up the eastern seaboard of North America. Knight visits the places tied to Kidd's last movements, consults historians and treasure hunters, and lays out the documentary trail, letters, trial records, and ship logs, that either supports or undercuts centuries of rumor about gold hidden on a remote island. The film treats the hunt itself as the story, showing the frustration of digging on hunches and the slow work of separating a privateer's real crimes from the folklore that grew up around his name. It ends with Knight's search still unresolved, treasure or not, and Kidd's reputation still caught between opportunist and scapegoat of the crown he served.
