The Zanskar valley in the Himalayas seals itself off every winter when snow closes the mountain passes, leaving one route out: Chadar, a 120-kilometer path along a partially frozen river gorge. This film follows the Zanskaris who walk it anyway, including a group of 150 men hauling timber and escorting schoolchildren back to their boarding school in Leh after winter break. The camera stays close to the ice itself, catching the sound it makes underfoot and the moments when guides stop the group because a stretch that was solid yesterday has turned to slush overnight. Families pray before stepping onto the river, and elders describe watching the ice with a wariness that never fully relaxes, since a safe crossing one day can be fatal the next. Cold, thirst, and fatigue are constant companions, and the film does not dramatize them so much as simply record them, letting the gorge walls, the cracking ice, and the exhausted faces of the porters carry the story of a community whose only winter road might disappear entirely.
