Richard Kuklinski sits for two HBO interviews, in 1991 and again in 2001, and describes killing people for the Mafia with the flat affect of a man reciting a grocery list. Five years into consecutive life sentences by the time cameras first find him, he explains his preferred method, cyanide, and the double life it required: contract killer by trade, self-described businessman and family man at home, a routine he maintained for decades without his wife or children knowing. He walks through specific murders in graphic detail, showing something close to genuine emotion only when the subject turns to how thoroughly he deceived his own family. Between the two sessions the film sketches the childhood beatings that preceded the killing career, though it treats that history as backdrop rather than explanation. There is no reenactment and no outside investigation here, just Kuklinski talking, at length, into a camera, a decade apart, saying largely the same things the second time as the first.
