Liverpool has more gyms and tanning salons per head than anywhere else in the UK, and this film goes looking for the people who keep them in business. Carolyn injects herself with unregulated chemicals to darken her skin, describing tanning less as vanity than as a compulsion she can't switch off. The self-proclaimed "King of Bling," a hairdresser turned local celebrity, holds court in a salon full of gold accessories and outsized opinions about appearance, styling clients while narrating his own fame. The camera moves through tanning booths, gyms, and beauty parlors, letting subjects explain in their own words why the look matters so much in a city that has built an entire economy around it. Alongside the humor of the personalities on screen, the film sits with the pressure underneath: what it costs, financially and physically, to chase a standard of beauty that never quite lets up. It plays as a character study of a subculture, not a takedown of it, with Carolyn's needle and the King's bling as the two clearest illustrations of how far people will go.
