Borneo's rainforest, at the northeastern end of the island, gets a tour through its protected reserves to show how the ecosystem actually functions, from the insect life crawling through the leaf litter up to its largest mammals. The film watches proboscis monkeys, known locally as násicos, and their social groups, and tracks the Sumatran rhino, one of the region's rarest and hairiest residents. Carnivorous plants get close attention for the mechanics of their traps, and the film pauses on the variety of orchids the jungle supports. The main subject, though, is the orangutan, called "monkey man" by locals, and the film follows the work at the Sepilok Forest Reserve, where orphaned and injured young orangutans are cared for after the timber industry strips away the forest they need to survive. The footage stays close to the animals and the reserve's daily routines rather than narrating from a distance, treating the logging threat as the throughline connecting every species shown.
