Iraq's rulers span roughly four thousand years, from Sargon the Great, who built one of the first empires around Akkad, to Saddam Hussein, whose fall closed a long line of Mesopotamian and Iraqi power. This film traces that span through reenactments staged to recreate courts, battles, and coronations, cut together with historians and regional experts explaining what each era's records actually say. The filmmakers work from original ancient texts, cuneiform tablets and royal inscriptions among them, to reconstruct how Babylonian, Assyrian, and later Islamic and modern rulers held and lost power. The film's real interest is continuity: how patterns of dynastic rule, conquest, and religious authority set in Babylon and Nineveh keep reappearing in Baghdad centuries later. It moves era by era rather than lingering on any single reign, using the reenactments to put faces on names that otherwise survive only as inscriptions, and letting the expert commentary connect ancient statecraft to Iraq's twentieth-century politics.
