The KKK vs. the Crips vs. Memphis City Council
A statue of Nathan Bedford Forrest, Confederate general and early Ku Klux Klan leader, stands in a Memphis park and becomes the flashpoint for this four-part series. When the KKK announces a rally to defend the statue, DaJuan Horton, a self-identified member of the Grape Street Crips, posts YouTube videos calling on Memphis gangs to show up in opposition. The series follows that call as it turns into Divine United International, an alliance of rival gangs organized specifically to counter the Klan's demonstration. Interviews with Klan members explain their attachment to Forrest's legacy, while Horton and his allies lay out why they see the statue as an active threat rather than history. The final episode shows the two sides facing off in cold, rainy weather, the planned rally against the assembled coalition. Shot on the ground in Forrest Park with the principal figures speaking for themselves, the series treats an old monument as a live argument still shaping who feels safe in the city.
