Near-earth space research gets traced from Benjamin Franklin's kite-and-key experiment with lightning to the sounding rockets and unmanned earth-orbiting satellites NASA relies on decades later. Narrator Charles Hughes walks through the data these missions actually collect, pulling in readings from solar, astronomical, and geophysical observatories to show what instruments in orbit can measure that ground-based labs cannot. Animated sequences step in where the physics gets abstract, diagramming particle behavior and electromagnetic fields alongside the live-action footage of hardware and launches. The film frames space itself as a laboratory, one stocked with particles, fields, plasma streams, solar flares, quasars, and pulsars, and treats each NASA instrument as a tool built to catch a specific piece of that environment. Produced for NASA and directed by Joseph Headlee from a script by Charles Gallagher, it stays close to agency footage and plain narration rather than dramatizing the science. The result is a compact survey of how the instruments themselves evolved, rocket by rocket and satellite by satellite, alongside what they found once they got there.
