The Last Ice Merchant

2013 · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Baltazar Ushca climbs Ecuador's Mount Chimborazo the way he has for over fifty years, cutting blocks of glacial ice by hand and hauling them down on the back of a mule. The film follows him through the ritual step by step: chipping ice at the summit ice caves, wrapping the blocks in straw, and descending to the market in Riobamba to sell them for a few dollars each, the same trade his father and grandfather practiced. Refrigeration and trucked-in ice have already put most of his fellow hieleros out of business, and Baltazar is now one of the last people alive doing this work. He talks about his brothers who worked the mountain before him, the toll the climbs have taken on his body, and what happens to a tradition when the market for it simply disappears. Shot on Chimborazo's slopes with Baltazar as the only voice on screen, the film treats his labor as both a livelihood and a vanishing craft, ending with the quiet fact that when he stops, no one will take his place.
