In 1955, six Oxford and Cambridge graduates drove from London to Singapore in a Land Rover nicknamed Oxford, a 19,000-mile first that a young David Attenborough helped film for the BBC. Sixty years later, filmmaker Alex Bescoby sets out to reverse the route, from Singapore back to London, with Tim Slessor, now in his eighties and the last surviving member of the original crew, joining the attempt in the same battered Land Rover. This opening episode covers the planning: tracking down the vehicle, assembling a modern team willing to attempt 13,000 miles of the same terrain that broke down and nearly stranded the original expedition, and Slessor recalling what the trip meant to a Britain still climbing out of postwar austerity. Archival clips from Attenborough's original Travellers' Tales broadcast sit alongside present-day interviews and footage of the team prepping the truck. The episode sets up the stakes for a series built on whether a journey once called impossible to repeat can actually be repeated.
