In February 1945, Canadian and Allied forces push into the Rhineland to break through Germany's last natural defenses before the Rhine itself. The film centers on the Hochwald Gap, a narrow corridor of high ground that German commanders fortify heavily, turning it into one of the costliest tank engagements Canadian forces face in the war. Archival footage of Sherman and Churchill tanks grinding through mud and shellfire is paired with maps that trace the offensive's stalled advances and the flooding and minefields that slow armored columns to a crawl. Historians and military analysts walk through the tactical decisions on both sides, from artillery barrages to infantry-tank coordination, explaining why a battle fought over a few kilometers of forest and farmland cost so many casualties. The film argues that the fighting at Hochwald, often overshadowed by later crossings of the Rhine, effectively broke German resistance in the west and opened the path into Germany's industrial heartland.
