The Letter: A Message for Our Earth

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Pope Francis's 2015 encyclical "Laudato Si'" argued that ecological destruction and human poverty are the same crisis, and this film follows four people whose lives embody that argument as they travel to Rome to meet him. Ridhima Pandey, a teenage climate activist from India, Arouna Kande, a Senegalese man displaced by coastal erosion, Cacique Odair, an indigenous leader from the Brazilian Amazon defending his forest from deforestation, and marine biologist Greg Asner, who documents coral reef collapse, each carry a personal stake in the letter's warning about the natural world. Their stories are cut with footage of vanishing coastline, burning forest, and bleached reef, alongside the Pope's own reflections on what he calls the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor. The film builds toward their audience with Francis, where four very different experiences of environmental loss meet the man who put them into a single argument about interdependence.
