Terrence Roberts was one of the nine Black students who desegregated Little Rock Central High School in 1957, walking past mobs and National Guard troops to enter a building that had been all-white days before. In this talk, delivered fifty years later as part of the series "Reconsidering Little Rock," Roberts speaks directly to the camera about what actually changed in American classrooms since that fall and what did not. He draws on his own memory of the crisis, from the Supreme Court's Brown v. Board ruling that forced the issue to the daily harassment he and the other eight students endured inside the school, to weigh the promise of integration against the record of the following decades. There is no reenactment or outside narration here, just one of the original nine assessing, in his own words, whether the fight he took part in as a teenager produced the education system it was meant to.
