Alexandria rose from a stretch of sand on the Nile delta into the greatest city of the Hellenistic world, and this film reconstructs daily life inside it. Founded by Alexander the Great and built up by the Ptolemies, the city fused Greek culture with Pharaonic Egypt into something new: a port of temples, palaces, and the famous Library and Lighthouse. Historians and archaeologists walk through what made the metropolis work, from its harbor trade to its mixed population of Greeks, Egyptians, and Jews living under one royal administration. Reconstructions and location filming stand in for what excavation and papyri have recovered, since much of ancient Alexandria itself, including parts of its royal quarter, now lies underwater or under the modern city.
