The Majestic Plastic Bag
A single-use plastic bag narrates its own life story, voiced by Jeremy Irons in a tone lifted straight from nature documentaries, tracking its journey from factory to a customer's hand to a storm drain and eventually the ocean. The mockumentary format from Heal the Bay plays the grandeur against the subject: sweeping music and reverent narration applied to a piece of trash that will outlast everyone watching it. The short was part of the organization's campaign for California's Proposition 67, the statewide ban on single-use plastic bags that voters passed on November 8, 2017, and the film treats the bag almost as a species built for survival, indestructible, cheap to produce, and nearly impossible to get rid of once it enters the water. There is no on-camera scientist or interview subject here, just the conceit carried through to its punchline, using satire instead of statistics to make the case for the ban.
