The Menendez Brothers: American Sons, American Murderers

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

In August 1989, Beverly Hills police found Jose and Kitty Menendez shot to death in their own living room, and it took months before investigators looked at the couple's sons, Lyle and Erik, as suspects rather than grieving victims. This film retraces the case from the crime scene through the arrests, the brothers' claim that years of abuse drove them to kill, and the trials that followed, including the first proceeding that ended in deadlocked juries before a second trial delivered life sentences without parole. Interviews and archival material lay out how the defense's abuse narrative collided with prosecutors' portrait of two young men after an inheritance, and how the case became a fixture of early-1990s tabloid television, with cameras inside the courtroom turning family testimony into a public spectacle. The film stays with the split reactions the case produced at the time, sympathy for alleged victims of abuse against skepticism that two adult sons could plan and carry out their parents' execution.
