The Meth Epidemic

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Methamphetamine's spread across the United States gets tracked from its origins with West Coast motorcycle gangs in the 1970s to its grip on small towns and cities nationwide. Produced by FRONTLINE with reporters from The Oregonian, the film follows the newspaper's investigation into how the drug, made cheaply from over-the-counter cold medicine, overwhelmed police departments, emergency rooms, and foster care systems in Oregon and beyond. Interviews with addicts, cooks, prosecutors, and public health officials lay out how meth labs multiplied in rural areas before Mexican drug cartels took over large-scale production, shifting the supply chain and the politics around it. The film traces the legislative fight over restricting pseudoephedrine sales, the chemical at the center of home-cooked meth, and shows what changed and what didn't once those laws passed. It is a reporter-driven account, built on the Oregonian team's sourcing, of a drug epidemic that moved faster than the policy response meant to contain it.
