Ayahuasca, the psychedelic brew Amazonian healers have used for divination and treatment since at least the 16th century, now draws growing numbers of foreigners to Peru in search of its visions. Filmmaker João Meirinhos follows three men pulled toward the same medicine for different reasons: Don Ignacio, an old shaman in Puerto Maldonado; Sergio, a tourist who stumbles into the experience almost by accident; and Osman, a recovering drug addict seeking healing who eventually becomes an ayahuasquero himself. The camera also travels to a Shipibo-Conibo community on the Ucayali River near Pucallpa to meet Maestro Antonio Vasquez, and to Iquitos, where David 'Slocum' Hewson runs a holistic center catering mostly to foreign visitors. Shot as fieldwork for a master's thesis at the Granada Centre for Visual Anthropology, University of Manchester, the film stays close to its subjects rather than experts, watching how curanderos, charlatans, and spiritual tourists mimic and misread each other along the same river of seekers.
