The Mississippi River runs nearly 4,000 kilometers from glacial lakes in northern Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico, and this film follows it through the regions Americans dismiss as flyover country. It stops in Memphis, the birthplace of rock 'n' roll, before tracking the river down to its delta near New Orleans. Along the way it visits the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, descendants of the people who lived on these banks long before European colonization displaced them, and it goes into New Orleans voodoo communities, showing a religion once demonized now practiced more openly. Interviews with residents, musicians, and tradition-keepers carry the narration, paired with footage of the river's landscapes, from wetlands to small towns built along its banks. The film's case is that this stretch of the country, often flown over rather than visited, holds distinct cultures and old traditions still very much alive, and that the river itself is what threads them together into something resembling a national story.
