The harpy eagle is the largest and most powerful raptor in the Americas, strong enough to snatch a full-grown monkey or sloth straight out of the jungle canopy. This film follows researchers and camera crews into the forests along the Orinoco as they track down one of these birds, an animal so rare and secretive that many people who live alongside it have never seen one. The camera work centers on the eagle's hunting behavior, its huge talons and double-crested head, and the difficulty of even locating a nest high in the canopy. Footage covers the bird stalking prey through the branches, feeding at the nest, and the surrounding rainforest ecosystem that supports it, including the monkeys and sloths that make up its diet. Narration lays out why the harpy eagle has stayed elusive despite its size, and what its presence signals about the health of the forest it depends on. The result is a close look at an apex predator most viewers will never have watched hunt.
