Sneakers tied together and slung over telephone wires show up in cities everywhere, and nobody agrees on why. This film goes looking for the origin of the shoefiti phenomenon, collecting the theories people tell each other on street corners: gang territory markers, memorials for the dead, a rite of passage after losing your virginity, a prank played on a graduating soldier, or simply kids killing time. Interviews with residents, urban legend collectors, and self-appointed street historians lay out each explanation in turn, often contradicting the one before it, while the camera lingers on real examples strung above traffic in different neighborhoods. Rather than settling on a single answer, the film treats the guessing itself as the subject, showing how a simple pair of shoes on a wire becomes a blank screen for a community's own fears and jokes about violence, sex, and death. It ends with the mystery intact, which turns out to be the point.
