Director Roger Nygard spends four years crossing the globe with a camera, asking one blunt question to whoever will answer it: why are we here? He sits down with Hindu swamis, Buddhist monks, rabbis, imams, Christian pastors, atheist scientists, and, in one of the film's stranger detours, a pizza chef who has his own theory of existence. The interviews range from Jerusalem to India to American suburbs, mixing recognized scholars and religious leaders with ordinary people who simply have strong opinions about God, death, and meaning. Nygard does not push his subjects toward agreement or stage a debate between them; he lets a physicist's account of the universe sit next to a monk's account of enlightenment without ranking them. The film tracks how these belief systems shape behavior, from comfort in grief to justification for violence, and shows how differently people who have never met each other answer the same handful of questions. It ends without a conclusion, treating the disagreement itself as the most honest answer available.
