The Nazi Officer's Wife

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Edith Hahn was a law student in Vienna when the Anschluss ended her studies and marked her as a Jew under Nazi rule. Filmmaker Liz Garbus traces how Hahn went underground, discarding her identity papers, adopting a false name, and eventually marrying Werner Vetter, a Nazi Party officer who came to learn her secret and kept it anyway. Newsreel footage of occupied Vienna and wartime Germany is cut together with Hahn's own testimony, recorded late in her life, as she recounts working in a Nazi factory under her assumed name and living for years inside the household of the regime that wanted her dead. The film follows her after liberation as she reclaims her real name and confronts what her marriage cost and preserved in equal measure. It is a survival story built on deception maintained daily for years, told largely in Hahn's own voice, with the newsreels supplying the world she was hiding from.
