In 1976, NASA's Viking 1 orbiter sent back a grainy photograph of a Martian mesa that looked, under a certain slant of shadow, like a human face staring up from the Cydonia region. The film traces how that single frame detonated decades of speculation about ancient civilizations and government cover-ups, with figures like Richard Hoagland pushing the artificial-monument theory into the mainstream. It follows the scientific rebuttal step by step, culminating in the Mars Global Surveyor's 1998 and 2001 high-resolution passes that resolved the "face" into an ordinary eroded hill. Along the way the film uses the Face on Mars as a case study in pareidolia, the same mechanism that makes people see shapes in clouds or faces in wood grain, and asks why a culture primed to find company in the universe was so ready to believe a trick of light and shadow was proof of it. Archival Viking and Surveyor imagery carries most of the story, with narration connecting the orbital photographs to the psychology behind their misreading.
