Poet Simon Armitage traces how her testimony carried weight far beyond the Lancashire courtroom, reaching lawyers, clergy, and King James I himself, and hardening into a precedent that later let child witnesses testify in witch trials as far away as colonial America. Hand-drawn animation reconstructs scenes from the trial where no other record survives, while historians Malcolm Gaskill, Diane Purkiss, and Ronald Hutton work through what let a beggar's daughter become both victim and instrument of the case. The film's sharpest turn comes twenty-two years later, when Jennet herself stands accused of witchcraft, this time on the word of a ten-year-old boy, the same kind of testimony that once made her famous now aimed back at her.
