The Perfect Crime: The Leopold & Loeb Trial

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

In 1924 Chicago, two University of Chicago students, Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb, kidnap and kill 14-year-old Bobby Franks, seemingly for no reason beyond proving they could commit a flawless murder. The film traces how a pair of pince-nez glasses dropped near the body unravels their alibi and leads police to a confession within days. Interviews and archival material lay out the pair's privileged upbringing, their fascination with Nietzsche's übermensch idea, and the meticulous planning that still left them careless enough to get caught. The back half of the film covers the courtroom fight led by defense attorney Clarence Darrow, who avoids a jury entirely and instead delivers a marathon plea against the death penalty directly to the judge. His argument saves both men from execution and lands them life sentences instead, a verdict that reshapes American debate over capital punishment for decades. The film treats the case as both true crime and legal turning point, letting the courtroom transcripts carry much of the weight.
