Three killings, three catastrophes: this History Hit documentary traces how single acts of political violence reshaped entire regions. It opens with the 1914 shooting of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo, the spark that dragged Europe into the First World War, then moves to the 1994 downing of Rwandan President Juvénal Habyarimana's plane, the trigger for the genocide that followed. The third case is the 1995 assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin by a Jewish extremist opposed to the Oslo peace process, a killing that stalled Israeli-Palestinian negotiations for decades. Archival footage, photographs, and historian interviews are used to reconstruct the circumstances of each killing and the chain of events it set off, from mobilized armies to mass slaughter to collapsed diplomacy. The film's argument is that assassination rarely ends a conflict; instead it tends to widen one, turning the death of a single leader into the deaths of many more.
