China's Qin dynasty lasts only fourteen years, from 221 to 207 BC, but it is the one that first unifies the country under a single centralized government, a template later dynasties keep using for centuries. The film builds its account from two sources: the excavation record of the Terracotta Warriors and the Shiji, the historical chronicle written by Sima Qian roughly a century after the dynasty fell. It traces Qin Shi Huangdi's rise, his legalist rule of strict laws and harsh punishment, and his order for an underground army meant to guard him in the afterlife, discovered by farmers digging a well in 1974. Archaeologists have since uncovered more than 8,000 figures, each face and armor pattern distinct, and the film walks through how they were molded, fired, and painted. It also examines the soldiers' actual equipment, swords, crossbows, spears, and the layered armor plating that varied by rank, reading the army's structure as a direct model of Qin society itself.
