
The Rise of a Global Company: From the Microscope to the Moon Landing
Carl Zeiss opened a small precision mechanics and optics workshop in Jena 175 years ago, and this film traces how that workshop grew into a global technology company. It follows the development of glass with novel optical properties and shows how Zeiss microscopes, used by more than thirty Nobel Prize winners, achieved resolution fine enough to display structures a thousand times smaller than a human hair. Interviews and archival material cover the light microscopes that let researchers examine living cells with minimal disturbance, and the company's role in the 1969 moon landing, where specially developed Zeiss camera lenses captured the mission's images. The film connects that space optics work to the later rise of photolithography and its role in microchip manufacturing, ending with the company's extreme ultraviolet lithography research that earned the German Future Prize alongside the Fraunhofer Institute and Trumpf.
