Rome's military machine outlasted almost every rival it ever faced, and this film traces how that machine was built, sharpened, and eventually broken. It starts with the citizen-soldiers of the early Republic and follows their transformation into the long-serving professional legions of Julius Caesar's era, the force that ground down Gaul and delivered Caesar his ultimate triumph. Alongside the legions stood the auxiliaries, troops drawn from conquered peoples, paid half wages and handed the dirtiest assignments, but driven by the promise of Roman citizenship at the end of service. The film tracks how equipment, tactics, and recruitment kept shifting under the Empire as new threats emerged, none tougher than the Germanic tribes, whose forests swallowed Roman formations and whose warriors inflicted the catastrophic defeat on Varus that Rome never fully recovered from psychologically. The final stretch shows those same barbarian peoples absorbing Roman methods and turning them back on the empire that trained them, until the system that conquered the Mediterranean world finally gave way.
