The Roper
Kendrick is a young calf roper from Louisiana chasing a single goal: a spot at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. The film follows him through the grind that sport requires, the practice runs, the local competitions, and the long stretches of waiting between events, to show what it actually takes to climb the ranks of rodeo roping. Rather than treating the sport as spectacle, the camera stays close to Kendrick himself, his routine, his setbacks, and the discipline behind the eight-second runs that decide everything. Louisiana's rodeo circuit forms the backdrop, a world of small arenas and tight-knit competitors far from the bright lights of Vegas that Kendrick is aiming for. It is a modest, character-driven profile rather than a sweeping survey of the sport, built around one competitor's ambition and the everyday work of getting closer to it. The film ends without guaranteeing Kendrick reaches the finals, leaving the outcome as uncertain as it is for him.
