When Nazi Germany surrendered in 1945, the violence did not stop for everyone, it simply changed direction. This BBC film examines the organized and extrajudicial reprisals carried out against German civilians and other minorities across postwar Europe, chief among them the expulsion of more than ten million Germans from Eastern Europe and the at least two million more who fled ahead of the advancing Red Army. It traces similar campaigns against Polish, Ukrainian, Finnish, and Caucasian populations caught on the wrong side of shifting borders, and confronts the record of Soviet soldiers' mass rape of German women, a subject long left out of the war's standard narrative.
