In 1622 a Spanish treasure fleet ran into a hurricane off the Florida Keys, and the galleon Nuestra Señora de Atocha went down with a cargo of silver, gold, and emeralds bound for Spain. The wreck sat lost for over three centuries until Mel Fisher, a former chicken farmer turned salvager, staked his career and his family's finances on finding it. This program follows that search, from Fisher's early dives through the years of setbacks, lawsuits over salvage rights, and the 1985 discovery of the ship's main debris field after his own son died searching for it. Footage shows Fisher and his crew hauling up gold bars, silver coins, and jewelry, and handling pieces of the actual haul on camera. The film treats the recovery as the payoff to a seventeen-year hunt rather than a single lucky find, laying out how much of the fortune came from patience, mapping ocean currents, and repeated failure before the 1989 windfall that made Fisher's name.
