In 1943, Allied intelligence believed Nazi Germany was racing toward an atomic bomb, and the one facility capable of supplying the heavy water needed for that program sat at Vemork in occupied Norway. This film follows the Norwegian commandos of Operation Gunnerside, dropped by parachute into the frozen highlands and tasked with destroying the plant without triggering a garrison response that could wipe out the surrounding town. Archival photographs, wartime maps, and expert interviews reconstruct the approach across the gorge below the plant, the placement of charges inside the electrolysis chambers, and the silent withdrawal that followed. The narrative also covers the earlier failed glider assault, Operation Freshman, and the bombing raids and further sabotage that kept heavy water production crippled through the rest of the war. Historians assess how close German physicists actually were to a working weapon and how much the Norwegian resistance's work mattered to that outcome. It is a study of a small unit operation with outsized strategic consequences.
