The Secrets of Silicon Valley

44 MIN · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Silicon Valley sells itself as a force for good, and journalist Jamie Bartlett sets out to test that claim on the ground in the southern San Francisco Bay Area. He talks to Uber drivers navigating an app that dictates their income and schedule, tech workers building the tools that track and rank human behavior, and entrepreneurs who genuinely believe they are fixing the world one platform at a time. The film traces how a counterculture ideal of freedom and flat hierarchies curdled into a handful of companies with enormous power over jobs, data, and daily life. Bartlett follows the gig economy's promise of flexibility into its reality of precarious pay, and asks the people building algorithms whether they have thought through what happens when their code runs the decisions that used to belong to humans. Interviews with workers, founders, and critics inside the Valley itself carry the argument, building toward an uncomfortable question about who Silicon Valley's disruption actually serves.
