The Slum

48 MIN · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Tondo, in northern Manila, packs one of the densest populations on earth into the city's largest cluster of slums, and this first episode of a six-part series follows two households inside it. Remy Permites, a self-taught midwife in the Paradise Heights area, delivers babies with little more than a stethoscope and a pair of gloves, since few residents can pay for a hospital. She lives in a cramped government apartment with fourteen relatives, doubling her home as a clinic, and spends her days pushing family planning alongside the paperwork and training she's still completing, including a scene where she helps a young mother bury a stillborn child. A few kilometers south, in the Beseco slum of roughly 45,000 people, fisherman Gener Pagtabunan tries and mostly fails to catch anything in a polluted harbor while his wife Lorna sells vegetables from their shack and takes their twenty-one-year-old daughter, already a mother of three, to get a contraceptive injection. The two stories sit side by side as one argument about overcrowding and its costs.
