The SlumGods of Dharavi

13 MIN · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Vikram grows up in Dharavi, the sprawling Mumbai slum often cited as the largest in India, and this short film follows his daily life there: the narrow lanes, the cramped housing, the work and the friendships that fill his days. Rather than treating the slum as a backdrop for misery, the camera stays close to Vikram himself, tracking how he moves through a neighborhood most outsiders only see in passing news footage. Interviews and observational scenes build a picture of a specific kid with specific routines, not a generic symbol of poverty. The film's interest is in what daily survival and ambition look like from inside Dharavi's density, where millions live and work in a few square kilometers of the city. It runs short and stays focused, letting one boy's circumstances stand in for the larger, unresolved question of what opportunity means in a place the rest of Mumbai tends to look past.
