Spain tears itself apart between 1936 and 1939, and this series builds its account from film shot during the war and eyewitness testimony gathered from both the Republican and Nationalist sides. Rather than settling for a single narrative, it lets survivors and combatants describe the same battles and betrayals from opposing vantage points, then widens the frame to show how the war became a rehearsal for the larger conflict to come, drawing in Germany, Italy, and the Soviet Union as outside powers used Spain to test weapons and ideologies. The series treats the war as both a domestic rupture, dividing towns and families, and an international event that foreign governments watched closely and shaped from a distance.
