The Spell of the Albino
Albinos in Tanzania are being hunted, their limbs and organs sold into a black market fed by the belief that albino body parts bring wealth or luck. Journalist Richard Mgamba investigates the killings on the ground, working alongside Isaack Timothy, a representative of the albino community who lives with the same threat he is trying to expose. Ghanaian investigative reporter Anas Aremeyaw Anas joins the inquiry, using undercover methods to trace how the trade in albino remains actually operates, from witch doctors who order the parts to the traffickers who supply them. The film follows the reporters into the communities most affected, where families describe hiding their children or sending them away for safety, and into the murkier networks that profit from the killings. Directed by Claudio von Planta for Al Jazeera's Africa Investigates series, the episode treats the violence as an active criminal economy rather than a historical curiosity, asking what it would take to shut it down while attacks continue.
