Rafid Ahmed Alwan al-Janabi, the Iraqi defector who became known to Western intelligence as Curveball, tells BBC Panorama that he invented the story of mobile biological weapons trucks that later underpinned the case for invading Iraq. Filmed on the tenth anniversary of the war, the program traces how his fabricated account, developed while he sought asylum in Germany, moved through German intelligence to the CIA and then into Colin Powell's 2003 speech to the United Nations, cited there as a key justification for war. Panorama interviews the intelligence officers and analysts who handled the claims, some of whom raised doubts at the time and were overruled or ignored. The film also examines other Iraqi National Congress defectors whose testimony reinforced the WMD case despite thin or absent corroboration. What emerges is less a single lie than a chain of institutional failures, each agency passing along a claim nobody had verified.
